About matthew

I'm a practicing journalist with over five years of practical experience. I've written stories that shaped the culture of a campus and profiled those whose stories might have been lost otherwise. I've interned in a top-25 market and covered a campus of only 1,400.

Video Director, The Asbury Collegian (Aug. 2017 - Present)

News Editor, The Asbury Collegian (Jan. 2018 - Present)

Previous: Opinion editor (Jan. 2016 - May 2017), Staff write (Sep. 2015 - Dec. 2015)

I spearheaded the Collegian's expansion into web video. I experimented with different formats - like newsmagazine, tight broadcast and mobile typography - and maintained a consistent production schedule. Some highlights include a sit-down with an athlete kneeling protesting during the national anthem, a feature of a new inclusive worship choir and a Facebook-focused brief on street preachers.

Controversy and conversation characterized my tenure as Opinion Editor. I tackled topics that many in the university's administration found uncomfortable or taboo. I penned two editorials on the balance between Title IX rights and religious freedom as Asbury requested an exemption from the law's protections of LGBT students, pregnant women and those who have premarital sex. I broke news of an Asbury theology professor demeaning women and minorities on Twitter.

News Director, WACW radio (Feb. 2017 - March 2018)

This position required me to stretch my broadcast skills to the most vitally nonvisual medium. I host a weekly political talk show and create minute-long news briefs, shaping the journalistic direction of WACW. As the only reporter, it's my responsibility to ensure I'm doling equanimous coverage to every newsworthy happening.

News Intern, WNCN-tv (May 2017 - Aug. 2017)

I shadowed reporters and prepared my own packages. In this position, I learned the ins and outs of daily news production. I balanced the pacing of television news, created new angles on stories and assisted the newsroom in any way I could. One of my favorite stories covered a clash between locals and their school board over school districts that resembled gerrymandered voting blocks; watch it by clicking here.

REmote Crew at 2016 Olympics, WLEX-TV (Aug. 2016)

I covered the Rio de Janeiro Olympics for Lexington's NBC affiliate, navigating both a foreign country and the world's largest sporting event. Watch my story here.
